Breaking News: Bunyoro’s Abbas Byakagaba Appointed as Uganda’s New Inspector General of Police

Kampala, Uganda – In a significant development, President Yoweri Museveni has appointed former Assistant Inspector General of Police Abbas Byakagaba as the new Inspector General of Police (IGP). Byakagaba, who hails from the Bunyoro region, takes over from Martin Okoth Ochola, who retired in March 2024.

Confirming the appointment, Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Farouk Kirunda stated on Friday night, “I confirm that H.E. the President and Commander in Chief of the UPDF has today appointed Mr. Abbas Byakagaba as the new Inspector General of Police replacing IGP Martin Okoth Ochola. Other changes have been effected in the Uganda Police Force.”

Maj Gen Geoffrey Katsigazi Tumusiime had been acting as interim IGP since Ochola’s retirement. However, sources indicate that Katsigazi was not considered for the permanent position due to concerns over his handling of several high-profile crime investigations.

Byakagaba has an extensive background in the police force, including serving as the commander of Kampala Metropolitan Police and heading the counter-terrorism unit, where he led operations against Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) extremists.

Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) James Ochaya will serve as Byakagaba’s deputy, taking over from Maj Gen Geoffrey Katsigazi.

Byakagaba’s appointment marks a new chapter for the Uganda Police Force as it continues to address security challenges and high-risk operations nationwide.
