President Directs Mobilization and Recruitment for Local Defence in Rwenzori Sub-region

In response to recent attacks by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) in the Rwenzori Sub-region, His Excellency, the President and Commander-in-Chief, has issued a directive for the reactivation of Local Defence Structures in areas surrounding Kibale National Park and the Greater Rwenzori Sub-region. The aim is to safeguard communities against potential ADF threats.

The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) officially announces the commencement of mobilization and recruitment for Local Defence Personnel (LDPs) in the districts of Kamwenge, Kitagwenda, Bunyangabo, Kyenjojo, and Kasese.

The recruitment process will unfold in two phases, with Phase 1 scheduled from December 27, 2023, to January 10, 2024, covering Kamwenge, Kitagwenda, and Bunyangabo. Following this, Phase 2 will immediately commence, focusing on the districts of Kyenjojo, Kyegegwa, and Kasese.

A total of sixty (60) Parishes/Wards will be involved in the mobilization and recruitment effort, adhering to the Quota system. Each Parish/Ward is expected to contribute 12 recruits, summing up to 720 personnel during Phase 1.

The criteria for recruitment are as follows:

  • Citizens of Uganda
  • Willingness to volunteer service
  • Physical and medical fitness
  • Adults aged 18-45 years
  • Minimum education of Primary Seven (P.7)
  • Submission of duly signed recommendation letters from LC1 Chairperson, Defence Secretary, and DISO/GISO
  • Residency in the designated area
  • No criminal record
  • Disciplined behavior
  • No other current employment/engagement

The mobilization process will be overseen by key authorities, including the Resident District Commissioner, Deputy Resident District Commissioners, Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces, Uganda Police Force, Internal Security Organisation, LC1 Chairpersons, and Secretaries for Defence.

This proactive measure aims to enhance the security posture of the Rwenzori Sub-region and ensure the protection of communities from potential terrorist threats posed by the ADF.
