Cindy Magara’s “Tuko PAMOJA” Coming To Your Screens

In a groundbreaking cinematic venture, Dr. Evelyn Cindy Magara, a distinguished lecturer of Film and Literature at Makerere University, in collaboration with Nyati Motion Pictures, is set to release the captivating docuseries “Tuko Pamoja” (We Are One). The series delves into Uganda’s rich history, highlighting the nation’s heroes and emphasizing unity in diversity.

Scheduled to hit cinemas with a series of 13 premieres from February to June 2024, “Tuko Pamoja” explores the geopolitical and geolinguistic landscape of 1870-1900 Uganda. Written by Rogers Atukunda and directed by Dr. Magara, the docuseries aims to uncover historical relationships between the diverse peoples of the Great Lakes Region.

The docuseries comprises independent premieres for different regions, showcasing the unique cultural and historical significance of each. From Bunyoro-Kitara to Buganda, Busoga to Ankole, and more, the segments promise a profound exploration of Uganda’s multifaceted heritage.

Nyati Motion Pictures, a well-established Ugandan film production company, has a history of groundbreaking films, including “Fate” (2006) and “Windows of Hope” (2011). With a commitment to bringing Uganda’s history to the forefront, Nyati is set to make waves with “Tuko Pamoja.”

Dr. Magara emphasizes the timely importance of the docuseries, stating, “This film aims to foster cohesion since our pre-colonial history shows that we are one.” She highlights that understanding the shared history can help diminish ethnic tensions perpetuated by colonial divisions.

The story unfolds through the historical footsteps of significant figures like Omukama Kabaleega, King Mwanga, Chief Awich, and Queen Muhumuza, who played pivotal roles in resisting British imperialism. Addressing contemporary issues such as democracy, neo-colonialism, integration, peace, and stability, the docuseries resonates with the ongoing efforts for unity in East Africa.

Audiences have been treated to a sneak peek through trailers on Nyati Motion Pictures’ YouTube channel, building anticipation for the series’ premiere on February 3, 2024. The first six segments will premiere at the National Theatre, followed by the remaining seven at Ndere Centre.

After the premieres, weekly screenings of each segment will take place at Ham Cinemax (Wandegeya) and Makerere University (Food Science, auditorium) from February 4 to June 8, 2024. The film will later be screened in major towns across the country, providing an opportunity for audiences nationwide to celebrate Uganda’s diverse history and shared identity.
