Government Declines Evacuation of Stranded Citizens Abroad
In response to mounting pressure from Ugandans abroad and opposition MPs, the Government of Uganda has made it clear that it will not be able to evacuate stranded citizens from other countries due to resource constraints. John Mulimba, State Minister for Foreign Affairs has revealed.
This announcement comes amid calls for assistance for approximately 30 Ugandans who were reportedly kidnapped by rebels in Myanmar, along with other groups facing similar predicaments.
Among the stranded individuals are a group of IT experts who were allegedly deceived into accepting jobs abroad only to find themselves in the clutches of suspected rebels. Additionally, approximately 60 Ugandans are currently stuck in Egypt, while nearly 200 girls remain stranded in India.
NUP MP Muwada Nkunyingi, along with other opposition MPs, has been vocal in demanding government action to rescue these citizens. However, the government has cited insufficient resources as the primary reason for its inability to facilitate their evacuation.
