Banyoro Community Rejects PAU’s Contribution to Empango Ceremony, Calls it an Insult

Hoima, Uganda – June 9, 2024: In a surprising turn of events, a section of the Banyoro community has resolved to return 100 cartons of water contributed by the Petroleum Authority of Uganda (PAU) for the upcoming Empango Ceremony. The ceremony, set to take place on June 11, marks the 30th anniversary of His Royal Highness Omukama of Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom’s ascension to the throne.

The PAU, represented by officer Sam Mugisa, offered 100 cartons of water valued at 1,000,000 Uganda shillings (approximately $300) towards the celebration. However, this gesture has sparked outrage among the Banyoro, who perceive the contribution as a gross undervaluation of the significance of the event and the Kingdom’s stature.

The Empango Ceremony is a momentous occasion, attracting support from various organizations and individuals to ensure its success. Contributions typically reflect the esteem held for the Kingdom and its leadership. Consequently, PAU’s offering has been deemed insufficient and disrespectful, leading to the decision to return the donation.

A spokesperson for the disgruntled Banyoro community expressed their dismay: “The Empango Ceremony is a deeply significant event for us, celebrating our rich heritage and the leadership of our Omukama. For a regulatory body of the stature of PAU to contribute such a paltry sum is not only disappointing but insulting.”

The decision to reject PAU’s contribution underscores the community’s expectation of more substantial support and respect from key stakeholders, especially those benefiting from the region’s resources. The return of the 100 cartons of water symbolizes a broader demand for recognition and appreciation of the Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom’s historical and cultural importance.

As preparations for the Empango Ceremony continue, it remains to be seen how PAU and other contributing entities will respond to this development. The community’s firm stance serves as a reminder of the deep-seated pride and reverence for their cultural heritage.
