Bunyoro, Uganda – June 9, 2024: The Banyoro community has made headlines by rejecting a donation of 100 cartons of water from the Petroleum Authority of Uganda (PAU). The donation, intended to support the upcoming Empango Ceremony, was returned by the Banyoro, who perceived it as an insult.
The Empango Ceremony, a significant cultural event marking the anniversary of the reigning monarch’s coronation, holds deep cultural and historical importance for the Banyoro. The PAU’s gesture, intended as a supportive contribution, was met with unexpected resistance.
Community leaders and citizens of Bunyoro mobilized swiftly to return the donation, expressing their discontent with the nature of the gift. A spokesperson for the Banyoro remarked, “While we appreciate the intention behind the donation, water, a resource we have in abundance, seems a thoughtless and inappropriate gift for such a significant event. It undermines the respect and value we expect for our traditions.”
